The 2024 ISTRO-Nigeria Symposium
The Nigerian branch of the International Soil Tillage Research Organisation (ISTRO-Nigeria) convened its 2024 Symposium on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Theater, University of Abuja, Airport Road, FCT.
This year’s symposium was themed “Resilience and Sustainability of Tillage Systems in Nigeria.” The discussions focused on how Nigeria can build stronger, more sustainable tillage systems capable of meeting agricultural needs while addressing environmental concerns. Particular emphasis was placed on mitigating and adapting to climate change, a challenge that continues to threaten food production and land use practices in the country.
The keynote address was delivered by Engr. Prof. A. Peter Onwualu, FNSE, FNIAE, FAEng, President of ISTRO-Nigeria, who highlighted the critical role of research, innovation, and sustainable practices in strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural systems. His presentation also stressed the importance of collaboration between scientists, farmers, and policymakers in developing resilient strategies for soil management.
The symposium brought together experts, researchers, and stakeholders in the agricultural sector. It served as a platform for knowledge exchange, presenting solutions that align with global best practices while responding to Nigeria’s unique agricultural realities.
By focusing on resilience and sustainability, ISTRO-Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to promoting soil health, supporting farmers, and advancing the future of agriculture in Nigeria.
